Active Research Network for Environmental Governance (ARNEG) expresses major concern about Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s 36-page Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) report.
A civil society organisation known as the Active Research Network for Environmental Governance (ARNEG) says Professor Frimpong Boateng‘s 36 page inter ministerial committee on illegal mining had policy gaps in clamping down on the increasingly rampant activities of illegal small scale miners.
In a press statement signed by policy lead Kwesi Yamoah Abaidoo, the CSO argues that a genuine lack of political will coupled with woeful institutional failure has contributed to the never-ending insurrection, which has become an existential threat to the nation.
The statement explains that in spite of the fact that the creation of the IMCIM was a strategic policy direction, the committee’s organisational structure was a driving force behind the politics and internal disagreements.
“While this report has gained traction among several stakeholders in recent times for various reasons, ARNEG exposes the sustainability and policy gaps presented in the IMCIM report,” the statement read.
It adds that any campaign that ignores political discourse is unlikely to be successful given the threat’s intrinsic political nature.
