CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOOD SYSTEMS

ICEG’s work focuses on addressing the interrelated issues of climate change and food systems in Africa. Our organization recognizes that climate change is an existential threat to the continent, with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifting rainfall patterns posing significant challenges to food production, food security, and livelihoods.

ICEG’s work on Climate Change and food systems focuses on;

  1. Building climate resilience in food systems: We work with farmers and local communities to develop and implement climate-smart agricultural practices that enhance productivity and resilience to climate shocks.
  1. Promoting sustainable food systems: We support the development and adoption of sustainable farming practices that protect ecosystems, promote biodiversity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  1. Advocating for policy change: We engage with policymakers at the national and regional levels to promote policies that support climate-resilient and sustainable food systems.

Our organisation recognizes that addressing the complex challenges of climate change and food systems in Africa requires a multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder approach. We collaborate with a range of partners, including local communities, governments, civil society organizations, research institutions, and private sector actors, to promote sustainable and equitable food systems that are resilient to climate change.

CLIMATE FINANCE AND ENERGY TRANSITION

Climate change poses a significant threat to Africa, with its vulnerable populations, ecosystems, and economies. However, with the right financing and strategies, Africa can transition to a low-carbon, sustainable, and resilient future. Climate finance and energy transition are essential for Africa to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Africa needs approximately USD 2.5trillion of climate finance between 2020 and 2030. This is an average of USD 250billion each year. This is a very huge financing gap considering Africa’s GDP. There is therefore the need for policy action aimed at generating and facilitating the flow of climate finance to Africa by African countries.

ICEG plays a critical role in supporting this effort through policy advocacy, capacity building, and project implementation. 

ESG GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORKS AND IMPACT

ICEG recognises the joint role of the state and companies in addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. Companies prioritising ESG factors are often seen as more sustainable, resilient, and attractive to investors. However, to ensure that companies prioritize ESG factors, governance frameworks are needed by the state to incentivise and regulate ESG practices.

 

 

The challenge is that many African countries either lack the appropriate legislation on ESG or the political will and urgency for effective implementation of ESG regimes.  Tracking ESG impact and driving corporate change therefore becomes challenging in African Countries. ICEG seeks to assist African countries develop targeted governance regimes with robust impact assessment mechanisms through active research aimed at driving change in line with global objectives on ESG.

1.Governance Frameworks

ICEG plays a leading role in coming out with progressive ESG governance frameworks, driving review of existing frameworks and advocating for targeted legal regimes and policies aimed at driving sustainable practices.

2.Tracking
As efforts to find a standardised measurement for ESG indices continue globally, ICEG has developed an annual system of tracking companies ESG compliance from emissions to corporate governance practices. This is intended to provide an incentive for ESG reporting by companies and a verification mechanism to prevent greenwashing.

RESOURCE GOVERNANCE

ICEG focuses on promoting natural resource governance in Africa, recognizing that the continent is endowed with abundant natural resources, including minerals, forests, water, and biodiversity, which are essential for sustainable development, poverty reduction, and social equity. As a result, the organisation works to promote greater transparency and accountability in the management of natural resources by supporting initiatives that improve access to information, promote citizen participation, and strengthen oversight mechanisms.

ICEG supports initiatives that promote equitable and sustainable use of natural resources, including community-based resource management, sustainable land use practices, and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. We engage with policymakers, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to promote policy and institutional reforms that promote sustainable and equitable natural resource governance.
